“Art therapy is a form of psychotherapy that uses art media as its primary mode of expression and communication. Within this context, art is not used as a diagnostic tool but as a medium to address emotional issues which may be confusing and distressing.”
from the British Association of Art Therapists website. In this form of psychotherapy a combination of talking and art making methods are used to explore and process one's thoughts and experiences.
Given the nature of creating art, this form of psychotherapy allows for both verbal and non-verbal ways of expressing emotions. It creates a movement between doing and thinking, expressing, and processing.
No expertise in art is required. The art materials or the creative processes offer an added language to explore one's mind and body. Having said that, a willingness to explore one's own creativity thought thinking and doing helps.
My practice is largely informed by psychodynamic psychotherapy, which rests upon the idea that we are all "work in progress" shaped consciously and unconsciously by, and in, constant dialogue with the world, those around us and ourselves.
In therapy, curiosity and careful inquiry open an emotional and psychological investigation of one's experience. This with the belief that through insight and awareness we might begin to understand ourselves and others better, aiming to live more fulfilled lives.
My professional experience has been focused on developing art psychotherapy within adult mental health settings. I have experience helping clients with a wide range of difficulties such as anxiety, depression, trauma, difficulties relating to others, palliative care and bereavement to name a few.
